Impact Hub Managua is developing a business recovery and resiliency project to support 50 Nicaraguan SMEs (1 to 3 entrepreneurs per SME for a total of 150 entrepreneurs) affected by the Coronavirus crisis. The expected result is to have 50 SMEs operating and growing with a new business model adapted to the new context and using digital technology strategies. The project is divided into three phases: The first phase is the selection and evaluation of SMEs/entrepreneurs. In this phase, a diagnostic of all applicants will be carried out to understand how the current impact of the COVID-19 crisis has affected their businesses. The second phase is business transformation training. 50 SMEs will receive training on how to transform their business model and adapt it to the current context. SMEs will be receiving the training through an e-learning platform, and also will receive the support from international and national mentors and facilitators. In addition to the technical business training, SMEs will be given guidelines to prepare a COVID-19 "action at home" project to create a positive impact in their communities. The third phase is the digital transformation of the SMEs. PeerSquared's first pilot involved connecting high school Mandarin students with elementary Mandarin immersion learners to provide continued conversation practice. We also organized and trained 50+ high school volunteer tutors to offer limited but free online peer tutoring for all K12 students in AZ. Over the past 2 months, we have validated the need and effectiveness of 1-on-1 online peer tutoring even with decreased demand during the summer. Karma’s nurse-assisted tele-health model allows those who are unable to see a doctor because of the pandemic to access expert medical care through a contactless service. Our business is fast-tracking reliable energy access for healthcare facilities and frontline health workers in the rural areas of Machakos, Makueni and Kitui counties where we currently have operations. We plan to quickly deploy PAYGO solar home systems (with more than 3 bulbs and some with potential to power laptops managing the health management system and data sharing) that are cost-effective to underserved and rural health facilities that they can pay with small instalments over a period to fully own them. This increases food production to help mitigate the projected 2021 famine and increase the farmers income to boost their livelihood within their communities.
