OneBreath, Inc.

CONNECT on Abaca

OneBreath is a new business addressing one of the most difficult problems in critical care medicine: Delivering high precision, highreliability mechanical ventilation at an affordable cost.

Location:
United States
Sector(s):
health care
COVID-19 Impact

Government planners have described a need for many thousands of additional ventilators in the event of a pandemic influenza or other large-scale medical emergency. Severe influenza often leads to respiratory distress which cannot be dealt with in the absence of mechanical ventilation. Since ventilators typically see less than 10% down-time in the US, there is little excess capacity to meet scaled up demand during an emergency. With a typical sales price greater than $15,000 for a new critical care ventilator, it is cost-prohibitive to stockpile a sufficient quantity of these devices. Furthermore, most ventilators in use today are ill-equipped for use in a mass casualty event or stockpiling, where electricity and oxygen may not be accessible, portability and durability are critical, and skilled users may be in short supply. OneBreath was founded by a group of physicians and engineers at Stanford University with the goal of developing a class-leading ventilator for rural critical care at an affordable price. The architecture of the OneBreath device is ideally suited to become the gold standard ventilator for emergency stockpiling. OneBreath is currently refining the design to ready it for Validation & Verification and FDA approval. Using the NASA Technology Readiness Level (TRL) system, OneBreath’s ventilator is currently at TRL 5.

COVID-19 Impact

Prior to being tested a member of the public has no means of identifying when they have been or are exposing themselves to potential risk of infection. We want to make citizens and residents aware of the potential risk of Covid-19 infection through their movements or when taking a journey. As people are the primary means of transmission, we need to be able to identify if an infected person in the community may have come into close contact with any other person. However, this needs to be done in a secure and privacy preserving way. We do this by using a mobile phone as a proxy for a person, as its movements will directly correlate to the movements of its owner. The outcome is that the citizen gets a Red, Amber or Green indicator (or risk score) of their risk of infection, which can then cue them for testing as required. This:•Gets people at greatest risk of infection into testing as fast as possible. It sets the priority for testing;•Ensures that testing facilities detect more infected people faster; which,•Makes the best use of testing facilities and test kits;•Slows the spread of Covid-19 and reduces the death rate.Note that Covidra is working separately with health organisations in order to inform automatically the priority for testing of individuals at risk, and to feed into the logistics for ordering test kits.

Tamul Plates Marketing Pvt. Ltd. (“Tamul”) is a UNDP/UNEP (SEED Low Carbon Award 2013)-awarded social enterprise working in North East India (NE). Headed by Co-founder and CEO Arindam Dasgupta, Tamul tackles the twin challenges of extreme poverty and environmental sustainability. Over the last 10 years, Tamul has successfully produced and marketed biodegradable disposable dinnerware, through community-owned micro-enterprises spread across NE. Tamul has created livelihoods for 5000 extreme poor, and its dinnerware products provide quality green alternatives to urban and global customers. Tamul produces its dinnerware through both a centralised factory in Assam and decentralised production units set up in village-level clusters. Close to 4,000 women are involved in leaf collection. This activity helps the women generate cash income for their families. In the decentralised production units Tamul supports rural women and youth producers to establish micro-enterprises for producing this dinnerware through capacity building, technical / financial advisory, and marketing support. Tamul has successfully supported 35 women and youth entrepreneurs and their 35 units have generated livelihoods for an additional 600 women. Tamul has also created a solid and sustainable market for dinnerware with repeat B2B orders within India and from countries like the US, UK, and Australia.

Over the last 10 years, Tamul has focussed on creating all jobs in its entire value chain, locally. The women and youth working with Tamul travel a maximum distance of 1-2 km for work and the rural entrepreneurs work in their own home production units. In the current scenario, local sustainable job creation has become very important. Thus, even in the lockdown, Tamul ensured that the arecanut sheaths could be collected and stocked in the arecanut sheath collector’s home, rural micro-entrepreneurs could continue their home-based production. Also, post the completion of Lockdown 1.0, Tamul could reopen its centralised production unit, after following all the regulations of the MHA guidelines. Through this process, Tamul not only ensured that no jobs were lost, but more sustainable livelihoods were created, as villagers found arecanut sheath collection and supply as the only source of income available during this period.

As COVID-19 spreads to Kenya, a lack of energy security is apparent in rural hospitals that rely on good and reliable energy services to take care of patients. To ease the burden of the main hospitals designated for the isolation and treatment of COVID-19 patients, the small health facilities in rural areas will also be overwhelmed by managing even other non-COVID patients. If these rural health facilities and local communities don't have access to power, this could magnify the human catastrophe and significantly slow the global recovery. Our business is fast-tracking reliable energy access for healthcare facilities and frontline health workers in the rural areas of Machakos, Makueni and Kitui counties where we currently have operations. We plan to quickly deploy PAYGO solar home systems (with more than 3 bulbs and some with potential to power laptops managing the health management system and data sharing) that are cost-effective to underserved and rural health facilities that they can pay with small instalments over a period to fully own them. Our network of VSE's will leverage their local intelligence to distribute the solar home systems, therefore, promoting convenience.

Leap Fund

CONNECT on Abaca

Leap Fund is a financial solution that lifts people over the benefits cliff, creating a path towards self-sufficiency and financial independence. Many low-income workers are deciding not to take pay raises, increase their hours at work, or advance in their careers based on the threat of a benefits cliff (essentially: earning a dollar or two more an hour, but as a result, losing public benefits that were worth much more than the income increase). Leap Fund is changing that: We have built a calculator - the first of its kind - that can predict individualized cliffs, and are piloting a financial vehicle that allows users to defer their income until they earn enough to replace what they’ll lose in benefits. Leap Fund is creating products that empower optimism, financial and career growth, future planning, and security for low-income families that need it most.

COVID-19 Impact

In the face of COVID-19, there is more of an expectation that financial coaches need to understand and navigate benefits than ever before. Many coaches avoid having conversations about cliffs because they can't tell if or when it will happen, and they have no solutions to offer. Our calculator can help coaches in surfacing eligibility, determining benefits cliffs, predicting future earnings and benefits impact, and predicting post-unemployment benefits and financial effects. In a post-COVID-19 world, many more working families will be utilizing public benefits as they re-enter the workforce, and our partners want to get prepared with the calculator to thoughtfully navigate and steer those conversations. Similarly, when re-hiring comes back on line for employers, benefits fluency and the ability to offer useful solutions to workers will become increasingly more of a requirement. COVID-19 has created a quick and dramatic upskilling of understanding that benefits are actual compensation and employers are seeing how many workers are weighing their options. Our financial solution will allow people to create the beginnings of a financial cushion that they've traditionally been kept from starting, as well as create a pathway off of benefits that "does no harm" along the way. Our financial solution frees people from being trapped at a cliff, forever sitting in a narrow box of benefits that barely keeps them going and no job advancement to ensure that they keep those benefits.

We use local small spinning mills to create yarns for our customers that meet their needs. We have created a Seacell-Pearl Fiber and Nylon blend specifically for a client that is looking to develop clothing lines for babies with health issues. Our scale is to create micro commercial top making and spinning mills to meet local regional needs for fiber artists (60,000 in the US) and develop a franchise regional scheme for this.We have sources of commercial textile machines that can be repurposed for this purpose and we can make the prototypes of these antimicrobial textiles for both individuals and mass market. The challenge in bringing US Textiles back is the cost of workers compensation so Owner Operated mills are needed. The model we propose is consistent with how the Aviation Industry pieces out to machinists who make the vanes for aircraft engines and other parts from/on commercial milling machines at there homes.Creating Healthy Fiber Blends and knitting and weaving yarns can be used for face masks (other apparel) and provide a income source for individual crafters.

Remote learning is challenging the resilience of parents as they balance supporting the remote learning of their child with their responsibilities in the workforce or navigating unemployment.RavenSearch services will support parents by mitigating the parents’ frustration; increasing their time for adult responsibilities; and reassuring parents about the progress of their children’s education.RavenSearch Services will accomplish this by connecting with the child’s teachers to address the confusion of the parent; developing customized strategies for using limited technological resources; and creating a conversation about their child’s progress in the context of Maine’s Guiding Principles and preparation for adulthood. In my experience, a 15-minute conversation with the teacher solves the parent’s initial problem. During a second conversation, the parent takes a more active role in problem-solving. A third conversation is usually between the parent and another parent, a real-life example of peer to peer learning. After all, it is the teacher’s goal to become progressively redundant.I’ve done this for years in my role as a classroom teacher, helping students, parents, and teachers solve problems they have in using technology as well as balancing individual circumstances and challenging schedules.

Nearly half of all healthcare spending in Kenya is paid out of pocket, whereas in Nigeria, out-of-pocket expenses account for 95% of spending. Data is the "operating fuel" of the electronic systems that are helping us survive the pandemic. But there are challenges. There are no continuous improvement business metrics in data science; and little incentive to move away from viewing each SQL query as unique, because data doesn't have intrinsic value. This creates significant waste that cannot be cleaned away, with contacts advising that a majority of all data science analyses do not produce actionable value.Information (organized knowledge) has intrinsic cash value. Data (unorganized) is an intangible. It has none. It never did. Now it does. Now it becomes a profitably-usable real asset with Proxy Cash Value (PCV). What does this mean?(a) Flaws in the deep nature of finance and data science make it impossible to put intrinsic dollar value on data.(b) These have been corrected. We’ve converted data’s hidden value into useful PCV dollars.(c) With intrinsic value comes the ability to deliver practical 'data science' business metrics.(d) Metrics give managers a practical tool to measure the business value of data operations.(e) With metrics, we manage data as if it is efficiently-managed physical inventory.(f) With metrics, we deliver continuous improvement to data science operations.

Serological testing is helpful in identifying large numbers of infected patients AND asymptomatic carriers (those who have been exposed but are not currently sick). With these products, we are hopeful to play a key role in deciding who can return to work and school and supporting containment efforts to slow the spread of the virus.

COVID-19 Impact

COVID-19 is driving a permanent shift in workplace norms. Companies, universities, and healthcare providers must prepare for the likelihood of long-term restrictions on access to spaces designed for many people. This will pose a number of unique challenges, including how workers and students will get their meals if they aren’t allowed to congregate in cafeterias and restaurants.Minnow has developed an IoT-enabled food pickup station (called a “Pickup Pod”) that enables contact-free food delivery and pickup. We have also developed a cloud-based SaaS platform that manages ordering, delivery, and pickup, as well as the network of pods. Our platform collects orders from users and sends them to an onsite cafeteria or restaurant. The orders are then prepared and delivered to a network of pods that are located throughout a corporate campus, university, or hospital. Users are notified when their orders are delivered and can pick them up from the nearest pod whenever it’s convenient.
